Mountain Top Obedience

Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh (which means “the LORD will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

We use the phrase Jehovah Jireh all of the time to attribute to God that characteristic of being our provider-I have no doubt that God is that. But I am struck by the fact that Abraham named the PLACE Jehovah Jireh. What place was that?

Physically speaking it was a mountain-but spiritually speaking it was so much more. It was the place in which Abraham was asked to sacrifice the very thing that he had believed God for all those years. It was the place where God expected him to give God’s promise back. It was a place of denying himself and everything that he held dear to prove to God that God was more important…

People think that testing comes in the valley; but apparently it also comes on the mountain too. And it is the mountain testing in which God provides. Jesus was tested on the mountain and his sacrifice completed on a hill.

The greatest provisions of God then are found mountain top sacrifices. The giving of life-withholding nothing.

What are you willing to sacrifice in the moment if your greatest triumph? What happens when God has given you exactly what you asked for? Will you still obey unto death—even the death or loss of the very thing you asked for?
